What is SumHunt?

SumHunt is a free daily word and number puzzle. Every letter is worth its place in the alphabet, so a word is worth its letters added together. Each day gives you eighteen tiles and a target, and you chain words with +, and × until you hit that target exactly.

Today’s puzzle

Daily No. 77
CRYPTIC CLUE What one team does to another in a rout, times what the tough are hard as.

Hit 3190 exactly, using the eighteen tiles above.

The sums run strictly left to right — there is no operator precedence to trip over, so 3 + 4 × 2 is 14 here, not 11.

You are never staring at eighteen random letters. Every day carries a cryptic-flavoured clue, so there is always a thread to pull. One recent day's clue read “Copy without paying, times repeat without thinking.” — the answers were PIRATE and PARROT.

Every day is themed: the answer words always share a hidden connection, whether that is breakfast (BUTTER, TOAST), chess (CASTLE, KNIGHT) or a moth’s life cycle (COCOON, LARVA, MOTH). On Sundays the clue points straight at the connection; the rest of the week it clues each word separately and finding the link is the reward. There is a streak to keep if you come back. It is free, there is no account and no app, and it plays in any browser.

If you already play the daily-guess games, SumHunt sits alongside them rather than copying them — see how it compares with other daily games like Wordle. If it is the arithmetic that interests you, letter-value puzzles are a small family of their own, and every SumHunt that has closed is worked through letter by letter in the puzzle archive.
